Soutine’s Portraits: Cooks, Waiters & Bellboys
19 October 2017 – 21 January 2018
This exhibition brings together an outstanding group of portraits by Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943). Soutine was one of the leading painters in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and was seen by many as the heir to Vincent van Gogh. In the early 1920s, he became fascinated by the cooks and waiting staff of French hotels and restaurants, attired in boldly coloured uniforms. The portraits of these humble figures Soutine painted over the following decade helped to establish his reputation. This major show is the first time Soutine has been the subject of a significant exhibition in the United Kingdom for 35 years.

Lara's brief for the activity:
We will be creating an installation that fills room 31.
You will incorporate other materials.
Please bring in long items such as rope, cord, tights, washing lines, inner tubes, old sheets (that could be ripped up) etc, these will be used to create a web like structure that fills room 31.
You will be working in small sub groups, starting in different corners of the room and meeting in the middle. We will incorporate the drawing equipment (easels, boards etc.) into the set up, and will spend some of the afternoon drawing and recording the installation.

Art Gallery Visits
First of the month and visits to three exhibitions.
1. Cezanne Portraits- National Portrait Gallery
This major international exhibition brings together for the first time over fifty of Cézanne’s portraits from collections across the world, including works which have never been on public display in the UK.
Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) is one of the most influential artists of the nineteenth century and his unique method of building form with colour and analytical approach to nature influenced the art of Cubists, Fauvists, and successive generations of avant-garde artists.
Over a working life of some forty-five years, Cézanne made almost 1,000 paintings of which around 160 are portraits. The exhibition will offer a unique and fascinating insight into this central aspect of his work, highlighting the special pictorial and thematic characteristics of his portraiture including his creation of complementary pairs and different versions of the same subject.

2. Dali/DuChamp- Royal Academy of Arts
Take another look at two artistic giants: father of conceptual art Marcel Duchamp, and larger-than-life Surrealist Salvador Dalí. This is the first exhibition to throw light on their surprising relationship and its influence on the work of both artists.

3.Jasper Johns- Royal Academy of Arts
Jasper Johns: ‘Something Resembling Truth’ is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s work to be held in the UK in 40 years.
Comprising over 150 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, it reveals the continuities and changes that have occurred over the past six decades and the curiosity and experimentation that Johns continues to apply to his current practice.
